THE TABLE CHURCH | Casper, WY

doubters + disciples together

The Table Church is an inclusive Christian church community in Casper, Wyoming.  At The Table church, we journey together as a Christian missional faith community to show love to everyone. The Table Church is a post-modern, emerging church. At The Table Casper, all are welcome and belong. All are accepted at The Table church. There’s always room for one more around The Table!

Around The Table we aim to be inclusive as possible of everyone along the spectrum of doubt + faith, recognizing the best way to get through life is togetherBelief in a set of creeds or doctrines or mental ascent to a set of propositions isn’t the point. Figuring out a way to live so that love wins is the point.

The Table is a community that is anchored in the Christian tradition, and one of the ways the earliest followers of the radical teacher and activist Jesus (the instigator of the Christian movement) were identified is as disciples, and for better or worse - it has stuck as a description through the millennia.

A disciple of Jesus is a devoted student of God’s love story with the world (the very best kind of good news there is). A Christian disciple therefore, is intentional in practicing a life that pursues this good news and that pursuit usually leads to a deeper understanding of and love for God. Such love spills over into healthy love for self, for other people and for everything else in the world (including our planet-earth and the universe).

Followers of Jesus should be “covered in their teacher’s dust” (thanks, Rob Bell). When Jesus was alive he did a whole lot of walking or riding on pack-animals in a very arid part of the world, so it’s probably the case he kicked up a lot of dust and that his disciples who literally followed him around couldn’t escape a layer of the dirt sticking to them. Hence the analogy when it comes to Jesus’ followers: sticking so close that they would respond like Jesus in most situations because they know his character so well. Similar to a kid who idolizes a musician or artist or sports player to the point of acting exactly like their idol. Disciples of Jesus are learners and doers of God’s love, hopefully as individuals but most especially in community with others in pursuit of the same.

The funny part about those earliest disciples though, is that they had lots and lots of questions. At times they just plain doubted who the heck Jesus claimed to be, and who God was, and how God was supposedly setting the world’s problems right again. The way their story has been captured and retold in the four books of the Bible labelled “the gospels*” tells a pretty honest version of being plotted along the spectrum between doubt & trust.

Which brings us to the doubters part of the equation. As a community anchored in the Christian tradition, we recognize that many of us are prone to doubt and question and critique especially of world-views or religious expressions that don’t jive with our human experience. Whether we identify as Christian or not, we’re all attempting to make sense of our stories, our existence and how we fit into the bigger picture.

Around The Table we aim to be inclusive as possible of everyone along the spectrum of doubt & trust, recognizing the best way to get through life is together. Belief in a set of creeds or doctrines or mental ascent to a set of propositions isn’t the point. Figuring out a way to live so that love wins is the point.

So - that’s why we gather, and that’s why we’re in pursuit of the common good.

We’d be really stoked to have you join us in this pursuit. We don’t have it all figured out. In a lot of ways we’re experimenting until our hunger for belonging & meaning in life is satiated.

To satisfy that hunger and to quench that thirst, we gather around The Table - doubters + disciples together.

*The gospels are like four separate personal literary documentaries of sorts contained in Christian Scripture that collectively tell the story about Jesus and his birth, life, teaching, experiences, death & resurrection.
